The Puppy Diaries: The Journey from Birth to Three Months
Have you ever wondered what your retired greyhound was like as a puppy? While you may know their personality and quirks, their early days remain a mystery to many owners. In this instalment of The Puppy Diaries, we explore their journey from birth to three months old.

The Journey Begins: Pregnancy & Preparation
Greyhounds are pregnant for approximately 63 days, during which time they receive careful monitoring and care. The expectant mother is given regular parasite treatments, and her meals are adjusted to accommodate her growing puppies. About one to two weeks before whelping, a safe and comfortable whelping box or kennel is prepared. This space is thoroughly disinfected and set up with soft bedding, such as carpets, vet beds, or shredded paper. The kennel is kept warm using heat lamps, central heating, or hot water bottles. Some whelping areas even have live camera feeds, allowing the mother to be monitored without disturbance.
The Birth Process & Critical First Hours
At around day 63, the mother will show signs of labour, including restlessness, nesting, and panting. Labour can take up to 24 hours, and human carers are present throughout to assist if needed. In some cases, a caesarean section may be required. Once born, the puppies are weighed and monitored closely. Some may need assistance latching onto their mother, while others may require supplemental feeding. The mother is also carefully attended to after birth, receiving light meals, hydration, and any necessary medical care to prevent infection.
The First Days
New-born greyhound puppies spend most of their time sleeping and feeding. They are gently handled by human carers, ensuring they receive the best possible start in life. At around two weeks old, their eyes begin to open, and they start moving around more. They also receive their first parasite treatment, and their nails are trimmed to keep their mother comfortable.
Transitioning to Solids & Socialisation
At three weeks old, weaning begins with puppy milk and finely cooked chicken. As their teeth grow, their appetite increases, and their diet expands. During this stage, their mother will take short breaks from them, giving her time to rest and recharge. By three weeks, puppies become more curious and playful. They explore their surroundings, interact with their siblings, and develop coordination. As their playfulness grows, they start nibbling on bedding, toys, and anything else within reach!
Preparing for the Outside World
Between eight and ten weeks old, puppies gradually spend more time outdoors, depending on the season. Up until this point, they have lived in a kennel with an attached concrete paddock to protect them from illness. Greyhound puppies receive essential vaccinations for diseases such as distemper, viral hepatitis, leptospirosis, and parvovirus. They are also microchipped and ear-marked for identification, ensuring their traceability.
